Introduction

The branding method you choose affects how your logo looks, how long it lasts, and what it costs — and the three most common options (laser engraving, screen printing, UV printing) aren’t interchangeable. Picking the wrong one for your pen material or design can mean a logo that fades within months or a cost that doesn’t match your order size. Here’s how to choose.

Laser Engraving

Laser engraving etches the logo directly into the pen’s surface rather than adding ink on top. The result is permanent — it won’t fade, rub off, or scratch away with regular use.

Best for: Metal pens, single-color logos, text or fine-line designs, executive and leadership gifting where longevity matters most

Limitations: Doesn’t work well on plastic (the material can melt or discolor unevenly), and is generally single-color only — not suited to multi-color logos

Durability: Highest of the three — effectively permanent

Screen Printing

Screen printing applies ink through a stencil, layer by layer for each color. It’s the most common method for plastic pens and handles solid blocks of color well.

Best for: Plastic pens, bold logos with 1–3 solid colors, large-volume orders where cost efficiency matters

Limitations: Ink sits on the surface rather than in it, so it can wear with heavy daily use over a long period; fine detail and gradients don’t reproduce as cleanly as other methods

Durability: Good for typical use; moderate compared to engraving

UV Printing

UV printing cures ink with ultraviolet light as it’s applied, allowing full-color, photo-quality logos and gradients that the other two methods can’t reproduce.

Best for: Multi-color or gradient logos, detailed designs, premium gift sets where visual impact matters more than unit cost

Limitations: Typically the highest cost per unit of the three; best suited to lower-to-mid volume runs where quality per unit matters more than price per unit

Durability: Good — the UV-cured finish resists fading better than standard screen printing, though still not as permanent as engraving

Choosing a Method

How to Decide

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. 1

    What's the pen material?

Metal opens up all three methods; plastic generally rules out engraving.

  2. 2

How many colors is your logo?

One color keeps engraving or screen printing on the table; multiple colors or gradients point toward UV printing.

  3. 3

How long does the branding need to last, and at what volume?

High-visibility, long-life gifts (leadership, executive) favor engraving even at higher cost per unit; large giveaways favor screen printing for cost efficiency.
